The original is housed in the Louvre in Paris, France.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eCharlemagne, Carolus Magnus, Charlemagne, King of the Franks and Emperor of Western Europe, was born in 742 and became an undisputed leader and one of the great centers of power in history: the Holy Roman Empire.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eCharlemagne lost his sword in battle and promised land to the honest finder. One of his soldiers found the sword and brought it to Charlemagne, who was fighting in the Ardèche at the time. The emperor kept his promise. He planted the sword in the ground and proclaimed his soldier the lord and master of the area.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat happened to Joyeuse after Charlemagne’s death in 814 remains shrouded in mystery. We know that the sword became a national treasure used during the coronations of French kings. For example, it played a role during the accession of Philip the Bold in 1270 at Reims Cathedral. In the centuries that followed, many kings would use the sword during their coronations, including the famous Louis XIV.
